During their latest product launch, HMD global announced the Nokia 8.3 5G — which the company has dubbed the first truly global 5G smartphone.
So what does global 5G mean?
Well, the new Nokia 8.3 5G will support multiple 5G radio band frequencies: from existing to currently evolving bands, as well as both standalone and non-standalone bands, HMD Global GM of Global Product Portfolio Pranav Shroff explained in a media briefing.
The device will cover the highest number of new 5G radio bands compared to existing 5G smartphones. This includes both high and low frequency bands, from 3.8Ghz to 600Mhz.

Global 5G: What does the mean for me?
Now that you know what global 5G is, what does it actually mean for the consumer?
According to Shroff, this means that the Nokia 8.3 5G will allow users to access 5G networks across the world.
Different radio frequencies used by providers often means that users can only use their 5G smartphone within a certain country.
However, the Nokia 8.3 5G will enable 5G roaming thanks to its broad support for frequencies.
HMD Global also announced its global roaming prepaid data plan HMD Connect alongside its latest device. The service offers a data SIM for travellers that can be used in over 120 countries.
Nokia 8.3 5G – price and features
Another interesting aspect of the Nokia 8.3 5G is its price. Shroff explains that HMD Global wanted to provide the 5G experience to consumers without a $1 000 price tag.
Many of the currently available 5G smartphones cost over $1 000.
However, the Nokia 8.3 5G will sell for a recommended global average price of 599 euros (equivalent to $640 at the time of writing).
Other features of the Nokia 8.3 5G include:
- 6.81-inch display
- Fingerprint sensor that is also power button
- PureView Quad camera with Zeiss Optics (Ultrawide + 64MP main + depth + macro lens)
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 modular platform (5G processor)

The phone also has special low-light camera hardware and software which enables Video HDR.
Nokia 8.3 5G – launch date
An exact date hasn’t been given for the Nokia 8.3 5G’s launch — however HMD Global has specified that it is scheduled for Summer 2020.
This places the launch somewhere during Q2 or Q3 2020 (June – September 2020)
